Steven Sparr, MD
Dr. Sparr has deep roots in Brooklyn: he attended the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn where he obtained BS and MS in Aeronautical Engineering. In 1971 he helped found a residential school for adolescents with drug problems in East New York. He attended medical school at SUNY Buffalo. He trained in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital (board certified) and Neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (board certified). In 1987 he became the first in America to complete fellowship training in Neurorehabilitation at Burke Rehabilitation/Cornell Medical Center (board certified). On returning to Einstein, he was a founding member of the Stern Stroke Center at Montefiore Medical Center in 1988, one of the first dedicated stroke services in the country, where he focused on providing rehabilitation services to patients with stroke and other neurological disorders and participated in numerous clinical trials for improving stroke treatments. He has received numerous awards for teaching at the level of preclinical and clinical medical student education, as well as resident and fellow education. Dr. Sparr has lectured and published extensively on issues of stroke rehabilitation and behavioral neurology (special interest: the neurology of music). Dr Sparr joined the faculty of Neurology at Maimonides Medical Center/Downstate and Brookdale/OBH in 2022.
