Ernest J. Barthelemy, MD

Dr. Ernest Barthélemy is a trauma and acute care neurosurgeon at the University Hospital
at Downstate, and the One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale University Hospital. His clinical
practice focuses on comprehensive care for acquired brain and spine injury, and cancer
affecting the brain and spine. His academic practice focuses on global health and
neurotrauma research, and educating students and residents training in clinical
neuroscience, spine surgery, global health equity and public health. Dr. Barthélemy is the
Chief of Neurosurgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and Director of the
Downstate Global Neurosurgery Laboratory, which focuses on multidisciplinary
investigations aimed at advancing health equity in acute care neurosurgery. He is also co-
founder and co-director of the Downstate Global Neuroscience Initiative, which hosts
annual symposia bringing together clinicians and researchers interested in advancing
global neuro-health equity.
